History
Saber was born on February 15th, the day after Valentines day. For his first 6 months of age, Saber lived with his mother, 4 siblings, and 3 humans. Shortly after he turned 6 months old, humans other than his own started coming and visiting Saber and his siblings, and eventually, his brothers and sisters began to disappear one by one. At first, Saber didn't understand why he was losing his brothers and sisters, but his mother explained to him that they were just going to live with new families of their own, and that one day he would do the same thing. And so, he did. A few days after his last sibling was taken to a new home, Saber was picked up and taken away from his mother and humans, only to be brought to a new, different house with only 2 humans.
Saber's 2 humans were nice. One was a male, and the other was a female, and they loved to play with him. They stopped calling him Saber and started calling him 'Napoli', until Saber eventually learned that his new name was Napoli. Napoli loved his two new humans very much, and they loved him in return. Months passed and Napoli got bigger and bigger, though he still hadn't grown into his over-sized puppy paws and ears. As the months passed, Napoli's female human got bigger and bigger and played with him less and less, and his male human started to get angry more quickly and discipline him more often. Almost a year after Napoli had been brought to his new home, his humans brought home a tiny hairless pup, and woudn't let Napoli inside the house anymore. Rain or shine, Napoli was kept outside in the family's small backyard. Life went on like this for a few weeks, and the young Saint Bernard grew depressed.
Napoli thought things were going to go back to normal one day when his male human let him inside, but his stomach dropped when he realized that there was nothing in the house anymore. The floors were bare and the comfy couches where he used to lounge had been removed. This left the over-sized puppy confused, so he turned to his male and began to yip, but only received a sharp kick in the side as a response. Getting the message, Napoli sat down and sulked while his human went upstairs to retrieve the other human and the hairless pup, before coming back downstairs and leaving the house with them. Not wanting to get in trouble, Napoli stayed in a corner and waited for his family to return. After several long hours, the young dog's attention span gave out and he had to do something, so he began to investigate the rest of the house. He quickly learned that all of his human's possessions had been removed. Napoli didn't understand why everything was gone, so he waited for his humans to return in hopes that they would help ease his confusion. Napoli waited for several more hours. Night came and went, and it was nearing dusk again when his belly began to rumble and he went looking for food and water.
He couldn't find food, but Napoli was able to quench his thirst by drinking out of the toilet that his humans had left open. After drinking, he went back down to the living room and began to paw and whine at the door. Still, his humans did not come back for another day. Napoli started to get worried that his family wasn't coming back, and he didn't know how he was supposed to get out of the house. He began exploring every room until he managed to find a window facing the backyard that one of his humans must have left open. The opening was barely big enough for his to fit his head through, but once he did, the large canine began to try and wedge his way through the gap as far as possible. Sadly, though, he got stuck halfway past his shoulders and began to bark, yelp, and whine as loudly as he could. He was stuck there for almost an hour until a small male human peered over the backyard fence and saw the struggling pup. Napoli barked at him, but the child disappeared.
Another half hour passed, but eventually, a few big humans made their way into the back yard and walked towards Napoli. He whined at them and began to push against the window again in an attempt to get to them, but to no avail. The humans talked amongst themselves, and one made its way out of the backyard. Another human from the group, though, produced a long pole with a small rope on the end of it, and pushed it towards Napoli. Napoli moved his head back and forth to get away from the unknown object, but eventually it ensared him and the rope tightened around his throught. The saint bernard struggled even more and began to yelp, as he was officially terrified, when a sound from behind him had caught his attention. Another human had come inside the house and was no approaching from behind the trapped dog. Napoli struggled more, but nothing he did seemed to help his situation. The latch on the window clicked, and the human behind him opened it enough for Napoli to scurry out and jump into the grass. Once there, he focused on getting loose of the rope around his neck.
He was a big dog, but Napoli was still an uncoordinated, lanky pup. Struggling against the rope only caused him to trip and fall into the mud. The humans took this as a chance to start pulling the pup towards the backyard gate. Aware that nothing he could do would set him free, Napoli surrendered and went with them. He was loaded up in the back of a large car and taken to a place that smelled strongly of blood, excrement, and dogs. Once there, Napoli was unloaded from the van and tossed inside of a cage with a concrete floor and fenced walls. The entire building had walls lined with either concrete and fenced enclosures, or stainless steel cages that were much too small for their occupants. Another human walked by Napoli's cage and taped a sign labeled 'Luke' to the door. After that, all of the dogs and humans began to call him Luke despite his protesting that his name was Napoli. Eventually, though, Luke gave up and accepted the new name.
Luke, despite being unsocial and depressed when he first arrived at the animal shelter, soon became a favorite among the shelter's employees and volunteers. This meant that he was always getting treats and got a walk almost everyday. For a while, life was decent. A month or two after arriving at the shelter, a family with two young children came in, looking for a gentle dog to add to their family. The kids immediately found Luke and took to him quickly, enough so that the mother asked for him to be brought out of the cage so that the kids could play with him. Luke was taken to a small section of the facility dedicated to families wanting to test dogs for possible adoption. The kids loved on him and played with him, and eventually the parents agreed to adopt Luke. Luke didn't understand what that meant, so he was sad when the family left. The next day, though, the young Saint Bernard was taken to surgery and was neutered. After a 3 day recovery from his surgery, the family came back and picked up their new family member.
Another family meant a new name, and so Luke didn't argue when the new humans started to refer to him as Sammy. He took to it as quickly as his had when his mother first named him 'Saber'. This new family was perfect for the young dog. The kids had endless amounts of energy and the parents doted on him night and day, eventually training him to be a well behaved animal and no longer an unruly puppy.
